Tracing Your Roots: FamilySearch.org and Other Websites

Join WCHS on Tuesday, October 1 (6-8pm) as we host speaker Stephen Barthel , a retired accredited genealogist who specializes in German research. Located in the Activity Room at the Wright County Heritage Center (2001 Hwy 25 N, Buffalo, MN), this presentation is open to the public; free will offerings gratefully accepted. This presentation will focus on how to use FamilySearch, highlighting Family Tree, FamilySearch Wiki, the Catalog, and other aspects of FamilySearch.org. Ancestry.com, which is a premium website available at no cost at family history centers, will be touched on. Also, key websites, designed for Minnesota researchers, will be included. 

About the speaker: Stephen S Barthel is a retired accredited genealogist, specializing in German research. He was employed for twenty-one years as a European Reference Consultant and Public Affairs person at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, which is the world’s largest genealogical library and the flagship library for several thousand branches, known as family history centers.

Stephen has helped prepare genealogies that were presented to several presidents, senators, governors, national news anchors, as well as many international VIPs. He has been a guest on television and radio talk shows. He was also referred to as a “bloodhound” in the March 2002 issue of Smithsoneanmagazine in the article New Roots to Old Roots. During the 2002 Winter Olympics, Steve appeared in a worldwide media distribution of a video on the Family History Library.

Privately, he has published about 27 family history books and written several news articles. He is a presenter at German and Polish genealogical conferences and historical societies throughout the United States and Canada. He is currently retired and resides in St. Cloud, Minnesota and serves on the Board for the St. Michael (Minnesota) Historical Society and also is involved with the Delano (Minnesota) Historical Society.
